Monday December 16th
Good Morning, students!
I apologize for missing class today.
Tomorrow - meet me in the cafeteria for class. Do not come to the arts center on Tuesday for our class. I will have some cameras available for anyone who needs them. Tuesday will be reserved for any students who still need to take their 6 food photography pics. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BRING YOUR OWN FOOD ITEMS AND PROPS. The only items I can assist you with are simple office supplies like paper for a backdrop. If you do it at home, please bring your photo with you on your mobile device so I can take a look and give you feedback.
Wednesday, we will be editing in class and all 6 photos will be watermarked and submitted on by the end of class Thursday.
Today: Scroll down and re-familizarize yourself with the project (Part One only). Then, scroll back up to this spot and fill out this questionnaire.

Food Styling...
Food styling is the art of arranging food so that it looks tasty and fresh. This is important in a number of situations, particularly when the food is being photographed. For instance, the pictures of food that you see in cook books, magazines, advertisements, and menus have been styled.

The Art of Food Photography
Food photography is a still life photography genre used to create attractive still life photographs of food. It is a specialization of commercial photography, the products of which are used in advertisements, magazines, packaging, menus or cookbooks.

Watch this video (left) by Tasty/Buzzfeed on "The Art of Dessert". Take note of the camera angles and props and backgrounds and lighting used to capture food in an artistic, appealing way.

The photos in the gallery below were taken by Miss Qureshi for a local meal prep company. Why did she incorporate these specific props? Why did she focus her camera on specific objects?
For your project...
Part One
You will take a series of food photographs. You will have to style it and consider lighting, background, and colors.
3 images must be of food by itself
3 images must be of a person interacting with food in some way.
You will be graded on thoughtfulness of all of the visual components included in your picture. Also, since you chose this project, you will be responsible for bringing in the food for your project. But no worries! It can be as simple as photographing an apple or something that was included in your school lunch. Whatever it is, I recommend it is not a food that will expire by the time you bring it to class to be photographed.
You will begin photographing in class on Thursday in the art room. You will have until Friday to complete the editing process. You will submit 6 images total. Each image MUST be watermarked.
Part Two
Choose your best photograph and design a fictional magazine cover using that image in Photoshop. Consider fonts, Principles of Design, and come up with your own creative Title and catchy article titles. Research examples.
1. Decide on your one picture, then research some food magazines. If your food item can relate to something other than food, you may get creative with it! (example: Gatorade bottle can be on the front of a sports magazine)
2. Come up with a magazine title and some catchy article titles.
3. Begin creating in Photoshop. I recommend starting with your photograph and then adding to it. If you have other plans for it (i.e. new background), the document must be no bigger than 8.5 x 11 inches.
You are required to submit the JPEG of your completed image by Wednesday via email.

Before you begin your food photos series, take a look at these student examples of food photography.
Carefully observe how the students either photographed the food SOLO or somehow INTERACTING with the food. What props did they use? Which colors and setup did they use to help make the food seem more appealing?
Keep in mind that you can take this photo any time, not just during class time. You will have class time reserved for you to do with with Miss Qureshi's assistance. if you choose to do this on your own, you must have it done the same day we do it in class.
