Vocabulary Terms in Photography
Photography

the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of light. “Photography” stems from Greek roots, and literally means,”painting or writing with light.”

Shutter Speed
|
the time for which a shutter is open at a given setting. The speed determines how long the film is exposed for.

F-Stop
|
Sometimes called the f-number, focal ratio, f-ratio or relative aperture, is the ratio of the lens’s focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. It is a qualitative measure of lens speed

DSLR Camera
|
Digital Single Lens Reflex is a camera with one lens that involves a mirror and prism that the viewer looks through when shooting photos, as opposed to a point and shoot or rangefinder where the viewer looks through a separate viewfinder.

Exposure
|
The amount of light allowed to fall on each area unit of a photographic medium (photographic film or image sensor) during the process of taking a photograph.

Aperture
|
A space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, especially the variable opening by which light enters a camera.

Depth of Field
|
The range of acceptably sharp focus in front of and behind the distance the lens is focused on

Wide Angle Lens
|
having a short focal length and hence a field covering a wide angle.

Photo Editing Terminology
Contrast

the difference in the color and brightness of the object and other objects within the same field of view. Think "bright brights and dark darks"!

Saturation
|
the degree of color intensity. To "up" the saturation would be to increase the intensity, to "down" the saturation would be to make the colors dull.

Crop
|
focusing on a certain part of an image and trimming the surrounding unwanted areas.
|
Tint
|
slight coloration of a particular hue
